About the Illustrator

Emiko Muto is a professional graphics designer and illustrator. After working for a graphic design company, she became a freelance artist. She’s been running her own business since 1993.
The idea for illustrating Fish Tree Tales happened when Sue was in Japan in 2007. She met Emiko through a mutual friend, and they became friends themselves. One afternoon, she and Emiko were at their favorite coffee shop when Sue told Emiko about some stories she had written. Emiko suggested that she could illustrate the stories. They laughed and joked about it, then the conversation moved on to other things. A week or so later, the topic came up and they joked about it again. But later they realized ~ they could do this! After Sue returned to the States in December of that year, she and Emiko began collaborating on the project.
These are Emiko’s first illustrations in the United States.
